The In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) technology is an artificial process of getting pregnant. A major scientific breakthrough this technology has brought hope to many women who could not conceive naturally. In an IVF pregnancy, the egg is taken from a woman’s body outside in a Petri dish to fertilize with the sperm of her partner. After fertilization, the egg is again implanted in the woman’s uterus. The mother’s body begins to produce hormones as soon as the eggs get implanted in the body and pregnancy takes place.

IVF pregnancy is good for women who or whose partners suffer from fertility related problems. The eggs are extracted from a woman’s ovary with the help of a telescope that can be inserted in her abdomen. This is quite an effective way to get pregnant without having to go through surgery if the patient has undergone a vasectomy or tubal litigation. Women who are in the age group of 35-45 who have lost hope of conceiving naturally can also conceive with the help of IVF. However if the male is old or not so healthy, chances are that fertilization may not be able to take place.

The IVF method of gaining pregnancy is a very costly affair and chances of it succeeding are not always there. So to minimize chances of a failure, two to three embryos are implanted in the uterus. This in many cases leads to twin or triplet pregnancy. Multiple births are always a risk with IVF and it needs to be monitored closely and carefully. After implantation pregnancy can be verified within 10-14 days. If the initial attempt failed the process is repeated with more eggs that were kept frozen for this purpose. This ensures success to a high extend but still does not guarantee it.

IVF pregnancy is determined by ultrasound within 14 days of implantation. However your body starts showing signs of IVF pregnancy much before that. These symptoms are the same as that of a normal pregnancy. These may include overdue periods, enhanced body temperature, enlarges and tender breasts, lower back pain, frequent urination, dizziness, cramps, nausea, dislike or fondness for certain kinds of food and mood swings are some of these.

IVF pregnancy involves certain risks and side effects as well. The rate of miscarriage is higher in such cases. Failure to conceive is also common. Entopic pregnancy in which an embryo develops in the fallopian tube instead of the womb is also seen. IVF pregnancy can have its own side effects. Severe one side abdomen pain, vaginal bleeding, sickness can occur. It also an emotionally stressful period for the couple; Anxiety, stress, depression are commonly seen in women. Sometimes these mood swings also affect their partners. There are several risks involved with this process along with the heavy expenses which naturally leads to varying moods and emotional strain in couples going through it. IVF technology is still emerging and advancing. It is a very good way to conceive if one fails to conceive naturally.
