There are always ways to help your children start talking. Here are some ways to help babies start talking …

  • Have fun with Nursery Rhymes, especially those with actions.
  • Obsorve your child’s interests, naming what he is looking at.
  • Talk about things as they happen e.g. unpacking the shopping, having a bath etc.
  • Try and have a special time with your child each day to play with toys and picture books.
  • Encourage pretend play.
  • Keep background noise to a minimum, turn TV/radio off when you are not watching/ listening.
  • Listen and draw your child’s attention to everyday noises-doorbell, aeroplanes, postman, animals etc.
  • Speak in short, simple, cloear, slow sentences, using lots of expression in your voice.
  • Talk to your child face to face when possible, using facial expressions.
  • Ensure that your child’s hearing is okay.
